“Marine2D” database

 

“Marine2D” is a web-based database which integrates genome and gene expression data of marine model bacteria. Broad functional genomics studies call for powerful and sophisticated data repositories for storage of genome sequences, experiment information, protein identification data, protein properties, and expression values. This can be realized by using elaborate database systems.

 

The post relational data model of Caché (intersystems) promised a flexible handling of such types of data within a complex database environment. Protecs (Decodon) bases on Caché and is a generic database system for functional genomics studies and serves as the basis for “Marine2D” that is currently adapted for studies of marine model organisms and corresponding meta-studies. “Marine2D” will perform data integration and will give a clear and structured display of complex information. For this we consider findings from visualization science, e.g. micro charts, heat maps and geo map displays in the development of the user interface.

 

Currently “Marine2D” (www.marine2D.de) provides data of the psychrophilic bacterium Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis TAC125, the bacterial endosymbiont of the deep sea tube worm Riftia pachyptila (candidatus Endoriftia persephone) and the planctomycete Rhodopirellula baltica SH 1. In the frame of this project this database will be functionally extended for the integration of “meta-omics”-data from mixed microbial assemblages.

Marine 2D
